The world was taken on by the Avatar. With amazing CG wallpapers, performance catch and 3D photography beyond anything we had ever seen before, the colossal adventure of James Cameron became the highest-grossing film of all time as it released in 2009. Success like that tends to breed sequels, so will there be an Avatar 2?
Originally intended for 2014, the as-yet-untitled follow up is the first of four sequels on the way. Once again we’re treated to some return into the picturesque skies of Pandora, where the indigenous Na’ vi people (y’ know, the tall blue ones) fought off the human invaders ravaging their exquisite lands to mine precious”unobtainium”.
Paraplegic Marine Jake Sully ended up falling in love with Neytiri, one of the Na’vi. He ended up becoming pretty near herhis understanding permanently downloaded into his”avatar” Na’ vi bodies. Err, romantic? Anyway, Avatar 2 will pick up the story of the couple they have Na’vi/human sprogs.
But what will we see from the movie that — before the Avengers: Endgame of 2019 — was the blockbuster hit of all time? We have sent out a recon mission to Pandora to learn all you want to learn about the launch date of Avatar 2, name, plot, cast and much more. Only no unobtainium that time, guarantee.
Avatar 2 launch date (and Avatar 3, 4 and 5’s release dates)
Do you know that Star Wars-shaped hole that will be creating December release schedules feel rather empty after The Rise of Skywalker? Avatar sequels will be on hand to fill it. Avatar 2 will be making its debut 12 years after box office records smashed.
Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have been written simultaneously and are also in the works, but we won’t have to wait quite as long for those — they are currently slated for December 2023, December 2025 and December 2027 releases if you want to receive them on your journal early.
The subsequent three, as-yet-unannounced Star Wars films will be on hand to fulfill Avatar-shaped holes in December release programs in 2022, 2024 and 2026.
Cut to the chase
- What is it? The big-budget return to Pandora, the energetic world James Cameron created for the first Avatar back in 2009.
- Where do I see it? This will be a massive tentpole release, therefore there shouldn’t be a lack of multiplexes where you can view it as long as James Cameron does not set the specialized bar so high that average cinemas can’t handle the testing specs. You need to expect it to arrive on Disney Plus following its theatrical release.
- When can I watch it? December 17, 2021.
