The Avatar took on the entire world. With functionality catch, CG wallpapers and 3D photography beyond anything we’d ever witnessed earlier, James Cameron’s colossal experience became the top-grossing film ever as it published in 2009. Success like that will strain sequels, so will there be an exaggeration 2?
Originally intended for 2014, the as-yet-untitled follow up is that the first of four sequels along the way. Once again we are treated to some return to the scenic moon of Pandora, where the native Na’ vi people (y’ know, the tall blue ones) fought off the human invaders ravaging their exquisite lands to mine precious”unobtainium”.
Paraplegic Marine Jake Sully ended up falling in love with Neytiri, one of those Na’vi. He ended up getting pretty close to her: his understanding permanently downloaded into his”avatar” Na’ vi bodies. Err? Anyhow, teaser 2 will pick up the story of the couple that they have Na’vi/human sprogs.
However, what will we see from the movie that — before 2019’s Avengers: Endgame — has been the blockbuster hit of all time? We have sent a recon mission to Pandora out to find out everything you want to know about the launch date of Avatar 2, name, plot, cast and more. Only no unobtainium that time, promise.
Avatar 2 release date (and Avatar 3, 4 and 5’s release dates)
Do you know that Star Wars-shaped hole that will be creating December release programs feel quite empty after The growth of Skywalker? Avatar sequels will be to fill it. 12 years after box office records smashed, Avatar 2 will probably be making its debut on December 17, 2021.
Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have been composed concurrently and will also be in the works, but we won’t have to wait quite as long for people — they’re now slated for December 2023, December 2025 and December 2027 release if you would like to get them in your journal early.
The subsequent three, as-yet-unannounced Star Wars films will be on hand to fill Avatar-shaped holes in December release programs in 2022, 2024 and 2026.
Avatar 2 cast: new and returning characters
Unsurprisingly, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are stepping back into their performance catch suits to play leads Jake and Neytiri, while Giovanni Ribisi (RDA chief Parker Selfridge), Joel David Moore (sympathetic human Norm Spellman) and CCH Pounder (Na’ vi spiritual leader and Neytiri’s mother Mo’ at) are reprising their roles.
Additionally, there are surprise returns for Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, whose personalities General Quaritch and Grace Augustine both died in the first film. Cameron verified to Entertainment Weekly way back in 2014 which Weaver is coming back as”a different and in many ways more challenging character” — it seems sensible to presume Grace’s return may have something to do with her consciousness passing into the Tree of Souls.
Grizzled soldier Quaritch, meanwhile, seems set to be an antagonist from the four movies. “I am not going to state exactly how we’re bringing him back,” Cameron told Deadline in 2013, “but it is a science fiction story after all. His character will evolve into quite unexpected places throughout the arc of the new three-film saga.” It is worth bearing in mind that this quote is from nearly seven decades ago (it is now a four-film saga), and you will never know what could have changed in the meantime.
There are loads of newbies joining the cast, also — such as Cameron’s reunion with his Titanic star Kate Winslet, who’s playing a character. Additionally, there Are functions for Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement (Dr. Ian Garvin), Harry Potter’s David Thewlis (Peylak), Star Trek: Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh (Dr. Karina Mogue), The Sopranos’ Edie Falco (General Ardmore), Game of Thrones’ Oona Chaplin (Varang) and Fear the Walking Dead’s Cliff Curtis (Metkayina main Tonowari).
Additionally, there are seven kids joining the cast. Jake and Neytiri’s children are played by Jamie Flatters (Neteyam), Britain Dalton (Lo’ak) and Trinity Bliss (Tuktirey), while there are 3 free-diving Metkayina children confirmed: Bailey Bass (Tsireya), Filip Geljo (Aonang) and Duane Evans Jr (Rotxo). Ultimately, Jack Champion plays a human teenager born on Pandora, called Javier”Spider” Socorro.
